Cathy is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a board certified supervisor. She is a Registered Play Therapist pending board approval, a Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Specialist pending national exam passage, and a certified clinical anxiety treatment professional for children and adolescents.
Areas of specialty:
Cathy provides mental health and behavioral health support for children ages 3-17, offering personalized treatment plans and goals that honor the whole child. Cathy is trained in working with children and teens struggling with ADHD, disruptive behaviors and mood dysregulation, trauma, grief, and adjustment challenges (divorce, illness, moves). Treatment strategies include the family, school, and other significant environments to better support each youth’s progress and stabilization. Play Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Trauma Focused Therapy, Filial Therapy (Family play therapy) and integrative therapy are primary models used to serve patients in a way that is youth centered and strength based.
Philosophy of Care:
Children will play out their problems just as adults talk out their problems, making therapeutic play an essential component of emotional healing for the youngest of our patients. Teens are a magical mix of childhood and young adulthood and speak their own language as they process their most challenging times. Cathy has enjoyed working with youth for over 20 years and has great respect for the youngest among us. She believes children and teens bring to their wellness team their own wisdom and passions and these are integral parts of their budding emotional resiliency. Together we will practice skills that provide emotional resilience that will last a life time.
Cathy has been a resident in Alaska since 1993 and graduated from the University of Anchorage Alaska with her Bachelors in Psychology and then Alaska Pacific University with a Masters in Counseling Psychology.
She is a member of the Association for Play Therapy and serves on the ACMHS Child & Family Advisory Council.
