botox before and afterWhat is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary). BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles, which reduces the muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form.

What to Expect at Your Visit

You will be asked to contract the facial muscles (frowning, squinting) that affect the area to be treated. This will help your medical provider to determine the best location for the injection. The injection is normally administered directly into the muscle with a tiny needle and discomfort is minimal.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery makes these suggestions:

  • Ask questions and be informed about the benefits and risks involved in the procedure.
  • Choose a medical setting using sterile techniques. Necessary equipment should be available to respond to any potential problems.
  • Avoid alcohol and remain upright for several hours following the procedure.

Results of BOTOX® Cosmetic injections

Results are normally seen within a few days. The results generally last 3-4 months.

While complications with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are rare, they can occur. The most common ones are aesthetic, such as drooping eyelids. Occasionally, BOTOX® Cosmetic can cause headaches or slight bruising at the injection site. It can, also, adversely affect people who suffer from musculoskeletal conditions and should not be used during pregnancy. For further information please visit: botoxcosmetic.com where more detailed data is available and you can view before and after photos.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are becoming increasingly popular as a means to help reverse the changes associated with aging. Because the goal is to return the dermis to its original youthful state, dermal fillers can give a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are being used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss. With advanced product development, they now last from a few months up to several years, depending on which filler is selected.

As our skin ages, the dermis gradually loses its major constituents: collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts as the major support protein for our skin, elastin allows our skin to stay firm and resist wrinkles, and hyaluronic acid helps to trap water and add volume to shape your skin.

A variety of dermal fillers are available in today. Some of the most popular include collagen based fillers, hyaluronic acid based fillers, polylactic acid based fillers, and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers. All types of filler materials can help promote the youthful appearance and fullness of facial skin, but there are differences in the way each product behaves and the duration of results. To achieve the most successful results, an important element to consider when choosing dermal fillers is: no one filler is ideal for all areas of the face. For example, lips tolerate fillers differently than the cheek areas do, and not all fillers can be injected in the lips. Our trained staff will assist you in determining which product best addresses your individual concerns.
