Abby Laing, ND
Abby Laing, N.D. is a primary care naturopathic doctor with a focus on intersystem dependency and lifestyle optimization. Born and raised in Homer, Alaska, Dr. Laing grew up commercial fishing and piloting boats around South Central Alaska. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and earned her doctorate from National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
Dedicated to restoring health and maximizing overall well-being, Dr. Laing works to empower both her patients and community through education and by building relationships with practitioners of all disciplines. Her holistic and integrative approach to medicine focuses on addressing the root causes of illness rather than the symptoms alone.
Utilizing conventional diagnostic tests and procedures, preventative and botanical medicines, lifestyle modification, nutritional prescription, physical therapeutics, and homeopathy, Dr. Laing tailors each visit and treatment plan to her patient's needs and desires.
When she is not in the office, Abby enjoys almost anything outdoors, (skiing, surfing, kiting, climbing, wake boarding, hiking, backpacking, etc.), but is happy on those cold and rainy evenings exploring creative interests in ceramics, fine foods, and wearable arts.
"I enjoy working with all kinds of people, from the brilliantly healthy seeking greater wellness to the chronically ill looking for another perspective, angle, or answer."
Each body is unique in its preferences and tolerances, and I believe that no one understands an individual better than him or herself. This is why I value time that I am able to spend with my patients, listening to their stories and trying to identify contributing factors in their disharmony. Each symptom is a piece to the puzzle of health and should be seen as a clue rather than treated alone out of context. I am continuously learning from my patients through their stories and the current research keeps me always unassuming and engaged.
Healing begins with understanding and dedication, so I help empower patients to take control their own lives and wellness. My therapeutic approach is straightforward beginning with the simplest solutions and building toward the more complex and aggressive. I start by helping patients make simple lifestyle changes and nutritional adjustments to optimize functioning of the body's own systems. Next, I supplement any deficiencies; then, move to natural therapeutics; and, lastly, to pharmaceutical interventions.
I love what I do because of the profound changes I am able to help patients realize in their own lives through education and empowerment. I see my medicine as a blend of both wisdom and knowledge intertwining art with science. I believe that the art of medicine is more than just the science, but, rather, the process of gaining an understanding of the whole person that really heals.
"What I strive for most of all is to see all of my patients truly thrive."
